Know-Your-Rights Toolkit for Unaccompanied Youth & Families Who Lack Stable Housing

2021-09-02T08:43:08-04:00

2020 Know-Your-Rights Toolkit for Unaccompanied Youth & Families Who Lack Stable Housing Homelessness is traumatic, especially for children, who lose their neighborhood, friendships, routines, and even school. And during COVID-19, homelessness can have even more dire consequences for families. But the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act protects youth’s right to stay in their school. The Law Center has updated our toolkits for families experiencing homelessness— including those doubled up with others after losing their own housing—that address the education rights of their children, which are protected under federal law. Submission to HUD on the proposed amendment to the Equal Access Rule

2020-09-23T10:45:19-04:00

Submission to HUD on the proposed amendment to the Equal Access Rule - 2020 The Law Center submitted a comment to HUD on their proposed rule entitled “Making Admission or Placement Determinations Based on Sex in Facilities Under Community Planning and Development Housing Programs.” The Law Center believes the proposed rule directly conflicts with the McKinney-Vento Act  as it would severely harm many students, especially LGBTQ+ youth, whose educational stability and success rely on safe shelter conforming with their gender. Honoring Justice Ginsburg’s Legacy

2021-09-02T08:43:27-04:00

Honoring Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Legacy The National Homelessness Law Center mourns the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We are grateful for her commitment—throughout her long career—to using the power of the law to protect and advance the fundamental rights of all Americans. A pioneer and fierce advocate for equal rights, Justice Ginsburg also fought her own battle against sexist policies and beliefs to become a prominent attorney and judge, ascending to the nation’s highest Court, where she continued to work and fight to make real the words that serve as its banner: “Equal Justice Under Law.”  Our [...]

2021-09-02T08:44:22-04:00

An Announcement to the Law Center Community Dear Friends, I’m writing with two pieces of momentous and exciting news about the Law Center’s next chapter of growth. First, in recognition of our continued evolution and impact, the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty is now the National Homelessness Law Center, effectively immediately. And, after 31 years at the helm, I will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Law Center at the end of this year. The name change is easy. We are simplifying and streamlining our name, but our mission remains the same: to use the power of the law to [...]

HUD Rules Promote Discrimination, Undermine Equality

2021-09-02T08:44:11-04:00

HUD Rules Promote Discrimination, Undermine Equality FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Karianna Barr Director of Development & Communications 202-638-2535 kbarr@homelesslaw.org Gutting Racial Housing Discrimination Accountability at the State Level (July 28, 2020, Washington, D.C.) – Late last week, the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) announced two rule changes to undo previous anti-discrimination rules for housing and homeless shelters. The new rules contravene HUD’s mission to create suitable living environments for all Americans and would allow discrimination—backed by HUD funding—to proceed. After months of the Trump Administration undermining the 2015 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) regulation, HUD circumvented the usual notice and comment rulemaking process; on July 24, [...]

IJT – July 2020

2020-07-14T13:44:30-04:00

July, 2020  SUBSCRIBE Dear Friends— Each month as rent comes due, more and more Americans can’t pay it: the pandemic coupled with the resulting economic crisis means choosing between paying rent and putting food on the table. A recent estimate projects a 40-45% increase in homelessness this summer alone. My fear is that the impact will be much worse. Before the pandemic, there was already a decades old affordable housing crisis in this country. Some 10 million Americans were doubled or tripled up with friends or relatives—due [...]

June, 2020 SUBSCRIBE Dear Friends— I hope you are finding strength during this challenging time. Earlier this month, I released a public statement on behalf of the Law Center condemning the recent brutal killings George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery—and of so many others before them. As we said then, as an organization committed to using the power of the law to end homelessness in America, the Law Center has a special responsibility to also call out and fight the structural racism that led to their killings. This [...]

Fighting for Policies to Make Real Change George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery. We at the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty say these names to remember these lives that were recently so brutally cut short—adding to the killings of so many others before them. As we said last week, as an organization committed to using the power of the law to end homelessness in America, the Law Center has a special responsibility to also call out and fight the structural racism that led to their recent brutal killings. This means not only [...]
