Representatives Reveal Housing Policy Bills, Endorse Housing as a Human Right

This was a monumental week for housing and human rights advocates, lawyers, and policymakers across the nation.

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal unveiled the Housing is a Human Right Act within a package of housing policy bills backed by The People’s Housing Platform. Representative Jayapal stood strong with her sisters in service Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, as well as Representative Jesús García and Earl Blumenauer. Together the legislators declared, “Housing is a human right!”

This bill not only defends the human rights of people experiencing homelessness but creates, expands, and ensures more support services and programs for homeless, housing-unstable, and rent-burdened households. The Law Center is very proud to have been a part of recommending sections on de-criminalization of homelessness, federal land use through Title VII of McKinney-Vento, and framing the narrative of the human right to housing! We hope that together we can ensure that everyone has access to safe, affordable housing they deserve and to continue prioritizing housing over handcuffs.
